The Labour Party 144-152 WALWORTH ROAD, LONDON SE17 1JT 01-703 0833 Giro No. 510 9213 from RON HAYWARD, C B E GENERAL SECRETARY RGH/JL/LB 10 March, 1981 The Director, Casa de Espana, 317 Portobello Road, London W10. Dear Sir, I am writing to convey to you our great relief and satisfaction that the recent attempt at coup d'etat in Spain was defeated. We believe the King Juan Carlos played a vital role in defending the institutions of Spanish democracy and preventing a return to civil war. We believe, however, that threats to Spain's elected government still remain. For our part we are watching carefully the political situation in Spain and we are prepared to do everything in our power to preserve and protect democracy and the rights of working people to freely organise in Spain. We uphold the right of the Spanish people to live under the democratic constitution they have approved in a referendum. There must be no return to Franco. We fully support the efforts of all democratic and socialist forces in Spain to safeguard and strengthen the country's democratic institution.
